Card To Bryce

Thank you Bryce

Thank you Bryce for coming to camp with Room 15. You were a lot of help and we just want to say thank you for all your hard work.

You helped people get up Sunrise Hut and were very encouraging when we were walking through the bushes.
You also helped with the cooking and it was delicious.Did you have lots of experience on the walks? I know I did.

We all had fun at camp and I hope that you had fun too.

Yours sincerely

Native animals

Native Animals

If you want to know about NZ native animals you are reading the right book. Native animals are animals that were originally unique to a country. They have not been brought in by people from other countries.

Kiwis
People in New Zealand are called Kiwis, after the kiwi birds, witch is a national emblem. When the chinese gooseberry was grown over here, its name was changed to kiwi fruit to show it came from New Zealand. The kiwi was named by the Māori people. You can see a kiwi at Kiwi North, Whangarei.Auckland Zoo.Kiwi Encounter at Rainbow Springs, Rotorua ,Kiwi House and Native Bird Park, Otorohanga. The National Aquarium of New Zealand and Napier. Kiwis eat seeds, grubs, worms and sometimes fruit (they dont touch kiwi fruit). Kiwis are sadly endangered mostly because of dogs and the most rarest kiwi is the Rowi Kiwi.

Keas

Although Keas are the worlds only alpine parrot, They are considered as pests because of their habit of damaging cars and and attacking sheep. Despite their protected status, Keas have divided kiwis to those who enjoy the cheeky parrots animated nature, and those who curse its destructive habits such as damaging cars, tents and building in alpine environments, attacking stock and habitually stealing food. The kea eats mainly roots, leaves, berries, nectar and insects. You can see a Kea in the South Island of New Zealand. Keas are about 48cm.

Bats

Bats are New Zealands only native land mammals. There are only two land mammals native to New Zealand, and they are both bats – the long-tailed bat and the lesser short-tailed bat. The Māori name for both species is pekapeka. The bats live in native forests throughout New Zealand. They roost in large hollow trees and the occasional cave, sometimes alone and sometimes in colonies (groups) of up to 100 bats. Most bats eat insects and are called insectivores. These bats like to eat beetles, moths, mosquitoes, and more.

             Facts
  • Kiwis scientific species name is Apteryx
                   (ap ter ex)
  • Kea scientific name is Nestor notabilis
            (nestor not a beis)
  • Bats scientific name is Chiroptera (ki rop tra)

Native animals are important as they are part of our ecosystem. They need to be protected so our native habitats stay in balance.

My School Holiday

1st February 2018

               My School Holiday

In The Holidays me, my Mum, my Sister and my Dad went on a trip to Opotiki and the trip was longer than 4 hours

We stayed at a batch that my Dad made out of a cow shed by painting, fixing the walls, getting hot water, and brought a fridge and Beds from hastings. It took a long time and he still is working on it.

Some of our friends drove to Opotiki from Auckland to see us their names was Alice and Tessa we had lots of fun with them and they stayed in a motel with a pool outside. We played in that pool and it had two black donut floaties.

We sometimes went to the Wharf there. At the Wharf it had these places to jump off and it has a water slide that was high up. It also had these ropes to swing and drop from it was fun and my mum did the ropes lots even the first time she was in her clothes and she still did it but i am a bit afraid of heights if i'm going to jump of them because I have butterflies in my tummy.

We moved there just before christmas and decorated the place with tiny christmas trees and tinsel and other christmas decorations.

There was a cat there too my dad named the cat bob because the cat was a manx and it had no tail but then we saw that Bob was actually a girl! So we named it Poppy. My mum said Poppy was so annoying because she keeps on getting her face in your face and Poppy somehow got in my mums tent when it was closed. My mum put poppy out again and Poppy just kept on scratching the tent.

The batches field had lots of grass and next to the field was a cow name Chocolate. Chocolate was brown and had a tiny udder because she has never been milked yet. My dad thought Chocolate was a bull because he didn’t see her udder.

I was quite sad when left because I gave Chocolate loads of food and water and I think she misses me. And Poppy came there so so much and now she has noone to cuddle with except for her owners. I wonder what they are going to do now.
